Thought networking events were pointless until one landed me a job
Used to hate those awkward mixers. Free pizza and forced small talk. Went to one in Austin three years ago just to get out of the house. Ended up chatting with a guy about old motorcycles for twenty minutes. He hired me two weeks later. Anyone else have a random connection pay off like that?

Yeah but I still think most of them are a waste of time. One good story doesn't make up for the hours of standing around listening to people pitch themselves. Glad it worked out for you, but I'll take a real referral over a lucky chat any day.

Oh come on @grant.nina, you can't write off ALL networking events just because some are awkward! I've gotten three of my last four jobs from conversations I had at random industry mixers, not from referrals. The key is picking the right events and actually talking to people instead of just collecting business cards.
