Update: I thought 'networking' was just a buzzword until I got my current job from a guy I met at a 5k run last year.
He mentioned his clinic was hiring over a post-race coffee, and that casual chat led to an interview that beat out 50 other applicants, so has anyone else landed a gig from a totally random connection like that?

Isn't it funny how the best stuff happens when you're not trying? I've seen this a lot... people forcing "networking" at events feels so stiff and fake. But the real connections, the ones that actually help you, just pop up when you're being a normal person. It's like the universe helps you out more when you stop pushing so hard for a specific outcome. Your story just proves that sometimes you just have to show up to regular life and be decent to people.

I see what @taylor_hayes25 means, but I've found that good things happen when you put yourself in the right places on purpose, not just by luck.

Totally get what @paigesullivan means about it feeling fake when you force it. Makes me wonder if we're all just bad at seeing the random connections we already have, you know? Like maybe the guy at the coffee shop you see every week has a cousin who needs your exact skills, but we're all too busy looking for the "right" event to talk to strangers.
