Visited a staffing agency office in Columbus and left with a weird feeling

I went to a staffing agency in Columbus last Tuesday to check on a temp assignment my cousin was doing. The whole place had this vibe like a waiting room for a dentist, but with way more nervous energy. What caught my attention was the bulletin board behind the desk, full of old job postings from like 2019, and the screensaver on the computer still said 'Happy Holidays' from December. The recruiter told me, 'We place people fast, but we don't promise careers,' and that just stuck with me. It made me wonder how many folks go there expecting a path forward and just get shuffled into gigs that don't build anything. Has anyone else walked into a place like that and felt the gap between what they advertise and what they actually offer? Or am I just overthinking a busy office? I'd love to hear if temp work ever led anyone to something real.

Most placements don't turn into full time offers, something like 20 percent do, and that's being generous. The 'Happy Holidays' screensaver in December is a dead giveaway that nobody's really paying attention to the details there. You're not overthinking it, that gap between the promise and the reality is real and it's by design. Temp work can lead somewhere, but usually only if you already have a skill or a connection that makes you stand out. For most folks walking in cold, it's just a paycheck that keeps you stuck in a loop.
