Am I the only one who thinks nailing into the end grain of a 2x4 is a rookie trap?
I was helping a buddy frame a wall in his garage last weekend in Fresno and he kept toe-nailing straight into the end grain of every stud. Three of them split right down the middle before I even picked up my hammer, and he blamed the lumber. End grain doesn't hold a screw or nail for squat because the fibers run the same way you're driving it, so it just wedges the wood apart. I showed him how to angle it into the side grain instead and suddenly nothing was cracking. Any of you got a better trick for teaching new guys this, or do you just let them waste a few boards first?
