Choosing between a miter saw and a radial arm saw for my first big trim job
About ten years back, I had a big trim job in an old house and needed to decide on a main cutting tool. I could either buy a new 12-inch sliding miter saw for around $600 or use my dad's old radial arm saw that was sitting in his garage. I went with the miter saw for the portability and safety, and it was the right call for that job's tight corners. It cut clean and fast, but I still have a soft spot for the old radial arm's raw power on long stock. Anyone else have a story about picking one tool over another for a specific project?

You mentioning that soft spot for the old radial arm's raw power really hits home. It's like we're all drawn to the simpler, brute-force tool from a past era, even when the newer, safer option is clearly better for the job. I see it with my neighbor who still uses a hand drill when a cordless driver would save him so much time, just for the feel of it.

For that first big trim job, the miter saw's portability is a lifesaver in tight spaces. You made the right call.

My uncle's radial arm saw has been in his garage for twenty years and he's never had a single accident. Sometimes the romance of old tools gets mixed up with actual danger.
