Oh yeah, nothing like getting a promotion and a new wrench thrown in your back on the same Tuesday. "Great job, now fix this mess you didn't make" - my favorite raise negotiation.

Wait, did they give you the raise first and then hand you the old mess, or was the raise supposed to be some kind of consolation prize for inheriting a nightmare? I'm trying to figure out which is more insulting. Usually when they do that to me, I start looking for the exit before the new responsibilities even kick in.

Had a buddy who got a "promotion" to district manager once. Walked into his new office and found a stack of HR complaints three inches thick and a regional director who told him "good luck with the turnover issue." Took him six months to figure out the old boss just hired anyone with a pulse.
