My kid asked why I measure everything twice and I realized I've been teaching the wrong lesson.

I told him it's to avoid mistakes, but he said 'or you could just measure it right the first time,' and now I'm questioning if I'm just passing down my own anxiety instead of actual skill.

Yeah that "measure it right the first time" line is brutal. Kid's got a point though, maybe we do pass on the anxiety.

That line about passing on anxiety really hits home. I see this everywhere, like when people triple check if they locked the door or re-read simple emails ten times. We're not teaching carefulness, we're teaching our kids to expect failure on the first try. It's like we've made constant doubt the normal way to live.
