Read a study from the University of Oregon that said a lot of old growth timber in houses built before 1940 is stronger than new stuff, which goes against what I always heard.

I always figured new wood was better because it's graded and treated. But this research said the tight growth rings from slow growing old trees give it a better structure. Found it in a trade journal at the library. Makes me rethink when I'm doing a demo on an old place. Anyone else run into this on a job?

Oh, "found that out the hard way" is so true. I was trying to pull out some old floor joists once and my saw just hated it. The wood was so dense it felt like cutting through stone. That old growth stuff is no joke. It really makes you slow down and respect the craftsmanship.

But what if that old wood is just rotten and weak, @gracet22?
