Saw a stat that stopped me about hardwood flooring waste

I was reading through a National Wood Flooring Association report that said almost 30% of hardwood gets turned into scrap on average jobs. How much waste do you guys see on a typical floor install compared to that number?

You ever think about how much waste we just accept as normal? Almost a third of hardwood just thrown away? That's huge. I see the same thing with drywall and tile too. People figure a certain amount of loss is just part of the job. So nobody bothers to fix the system. It's like we're all just okay with throwing money and materials in the dumpster.

Doesn't that mindset just bleed into everything else in construction too? You hit the nail on the head about people just accepting loss as normal. I've seen whole pallets of brand new tile get dumped because the color was slightly off from the order, and nobody even thought to try returning it or donating it. The real problem is that waste is baked into the budget from the start, so there's zero incentive to change. Contractors figure they'll just pass the cost on to the homeowner anyway, and guess who ends up paying for all that thrown away material. It's a bad cycle, and it won't stop until someone forces the industry to actually account for every board and every tile.
