The difference 3 grits of sandpaper made on a single dining table

I refinished a walnut table last month, used 80, 120, then 220 grit, and the final coat of oil came out glass smooth. Has anyone else dialed in a specific grit progression that just clicks for certain woods?

...and then I hit it with 400 by hand before the final oil, but honestly for walnut I think stopping at 220 is fine if you're doing a matte finish. The higher grit tends to burnish it too much and the oil doesn't bite as well. For softer woods like pine I usually stop at 150 because going finer just makes the grain feel plasticky.

Going up to 400 grit changes the whole game for walnut in my book.
