TIL using CLS on a mahogany door is a total mistake

I tried using CLS (clear low-sheen) poly on a mahogany door I was finishing for a client in Denver, and it came out looking like hazy milk. The tannins in the wood reacted weird with the finish and it took me 3 sandings and a coat of shellac to fix it. Has anyone else had a bad reaction with oil-based clears on dense hardwoods?

Right, three sandings and a shellac coat is practically just the warm-up before you actually start.

Wait are we really calling this a huge deal? Three sandings and a coat of shellac sounds like a pretty standard Tuesday for anyone who's been finishing wood for more than a week.

Honestly I gotta push back a bit here. Three solid sandings and a clean shellac coat isn't nothing - getting the grain right and avoiding bubbles takes some real finesse. It's not rocket science but it's also not just boiling water.
