Why does nobody talk about marking gauges going dull

I was out on a job site in Portland last week trimming out a custom closet and my marking gauge just would not cut clean. Ended up dragging fibers across a $300 piece of walnut and had to sand for 20 minutes. Swapped to a freshly sharpened one and it cut like butter. Anyone else just sharpen theirs once a year and forget about it?

Wait, do people really only sharpen theirs once a year? I used to be one of those guys who just kept using the same dull gauge until it scratched everything up. But honestly, after ruining a nice piece of cherry last month, I finally got a proper sharpening stone and now I touch it up before every big project. It's such a small thing but makes a huge difference. I feel dumb for ignoring it for so long.

It's funny how we ignore small habits until something costly happens, isn't it @hannahw30...
