Vent: My walk-in freezer's drain line froze solid last Friday night.

I noticed a small puddle by the unit around 8 PM. Spent an hour trying to snake it with hot water and a shop vac, nothing moved. Had to shut down the whole section, pull all the product, and use a heat gun on the pipe for almost three hours. The whole mess took over five hours to fix and cost me a ton of prep time. Anyone know a better way to prevent that line from freezing up in the first place?

Have you checked if the drain trap has enough water in it? A dry trap lets cold air travel up the pipe and freeze the line, so just pouring a bit of hot water down there weekly can stop it. That simple habit saved me from doing the heat gun dance again.

My uncle's restaurant in Tampa had the same problem every winter. It feels like half the service calls for commercial kitchens are just frozen drain lines. They ended up running a small heat tape along the pipe as a permanent fix.

Heat tape is a total lifesaver for that!
