Wasted $200 on a fancy mandoline that couldn't slice a tomato
I bought that expensive metal mandoline with the julienne blades six months ago, thinking it would speed up my prep work. First use the blade guard broke and I nearly lost a fingertip, then the thing rusted after one wash. Anyone else had luck with a simple plastic Benriner instead?

$200 and it couldn't even handle a tomato? That's like buying a sports car that stalls at a stop sign. I had the same fancy mandoline with the adjustable thickness knob, and after three uses the blade alignment was so off it made everything look like a failed art project. The Benriner is the way to go, just don't use the hand guard, that thing is basically a suggestion.

Man, "failed art project" is exactly right. I tried slicing a sweet potato on mine and it came out looking like some abstract sculpture I'd be embarrassed to hang in my garage. And don't even get me started on the hand guard. I nicked my thumb so bad practicing with it that I actually taped a hot dog to my finger as a decoy. But hey, at least the hot dog slices were perfectly even.
