Book return without a receipt sparked a policy debate at work

A customer tried to give back a novel they bought a while ago but had no proof of purchase. Some staff say we should give store credit to keep peace, while others say it breaks store rules and leads to trouble. How do you deal with customers who want returns without receipts?

Giving store credit just to avoid an argument can actually cause more issues later. If you bend the rules once, that customer will expect it every single time they come back. It's not really fair to other people who follow the normal policy. A clear rule, like only returns with a receipt, stops confusion for everyone, staff and customers.

Bending rules beats a scene in the store right now.

Hold up, think about the staff stress from no clear call. They get yelled at either way, so a manager needs to make one rule stick. Confusion just makes everyone's job harder for no reason.
