Changed my mind about taking customer calls at home after that cable company mess

I used to think handling complaints from my living room was easier than going into the office. Then last Tuesday I spent 45 minutes on the phone with a guy from Springfield who insisted his internet was slow because of my tone of voice. He kept saying I sounded too cheerful and it was disrespectful. I finally just muted myself and let him rant until he hung up. Has anyone else had a caller get mad at them for something totally weird like that?

Honestly I think muted rants are just part of the job these days.

Got a buddy who works at a call center and he said he’s gotten so good at the muted rant that he once spent a solid minute trash-talking a customer under his breath before realizing his headset was still live. He froze, heart pounding, but the guy just kept talking like nothing happened. Now he double-taps the mute button three times before letting loose, just to be safe.

Yeah I've definitely had a few close calls myself, you get so in the zone of venting that you forget the mute is basically a suggestion more than a guarantee. Triple tapping is smart honestly, I started doing the same after I accidentally unmuted myself mid-rant and just kept talking like nothing was wrong hoping nobody caught it.
