Guy tried to return a half-eaten sandwich because it 'wasn't fresh'

Had a dude march up to my counter at the deli last Tuesday holding a turkey club with two bites missing, demanding a full refund because the bread was 'barely toasted.' I asked him if he thought his refund would cover the bite he already swallowed, and he deadpanned like it was a serious question.

My buddy Dave had a lady try to return a half-eaten bagel once because she decided she didn't like sesame seeds after all... he just stared at her until she walked away.

Oh man, that's the kind of thing that makes you wonder if people just wake up and choose chaos. Idk, maybe it's just me but I feel like there's a whole untold story here about how we treat service workers like they're supposed to be mind readers or something. Like, the bagel didn't change its mind about having sesame seeds on it, you know? It was always a sesame bagel from the start. Props to @milaprice's buddy Dave for just staring her down instead of getting into some big argument about it. Sometimes silence really is the best response when someone is being that unreasonable.

Man, some people really just have no shame. I've had this happen more times than I can count. Best way to handle it is to keep your face totally straight and say something like "Sure, let me get my manager and a refund form." Then just walk to the back and stand there for a solid minute. Most of them get the hint and leave. @milaprice's buddy Dave had the right idea with that stare down, it's all about not giving them any drama to feed off of. If they argue, just repeat the same line about policy and don't engage any further.
