My old manager's "just smile and nod" advice nearly cost me $2,300

Back in 2019 I worked retail at a big box store in Columbus. My manager Carol, she was in her 60s, told me that when a customer is yelling, never argue even if they're factually wrong. Just smile, nod, and repeat their order back. She said it de-escalates everything. I thought she meant for the little stuff, like returns without receipts. But one Saturday this guy came in furious because his TV mount was missing screws. He was waving the box around and shouting at me. I did the smile and nod thing, repeated that he needed the screws, and he got MORE mad. Said I was mocking him. Turns out he had the screws in his pocket the whole time. He found them after I called the manager. Then he tried to get me fired for "wasting his time." Carol backed me up but also laughed later saying I should have asked to see the box first instead of just nodding. So the advice was half right. Smiling works, but you still gotta check the facts before you agree. Has anyone else had a boss give them a customer script that backfired hard?
