Rant: I got tricked by a fake tech support call and lost $150
Honestly, this happened last Tuesday. I got a call from a guy saying he was from Microsoft and my computer was sending out viruses. He sounded so real and had me download a program to 'fix' it. After an hour on the phone, he said I needed to pay $150 for a security license. I paid it over the phone. Tbh, my computer was fine the whole time and the program he made me install was just spyware. Has anyone else had a scammer call them pretending to be tech support?

Did you get that spyware cleaned off yet? Rose_craig97 is right about the remote access part, it's like handing over your keys. My aunt had a similar call but about her "wifi being hacked," it really shook her up.

Okay but "sounded so real" is the key part here. They are trained to sound real because it's their job. Your mistake was not hanging up the moment they asked for remote access. Real tech companies do not call you out of the blue like that. You basically invited a stranger into your house because they said they were a cop. The $150 is gone and now you have spyware. This is a very expensive lesson to always be the one to make the first call if you need help.
