So I had to decide between giving a refund or sticking to policy on a damaged return

A customer sent back a clearly used coffee maker, covered in grounds, but swore it was 'defective'. My boss said I could either refund the $89.99 or tell them no, citing our 30-day rule. I went with the refund, thinking it would avoid a fight. They called back the next day, yelled for twenty minutes about a different order, and left a nasty review anyway. Anyone else have a 'nice' move blow up in their face like that?

Used to think being nice paid off. That kind of stuff just kills that idea.

So you still believe in karma? I held a door for a guy last week and he just walked through without a word, then almost let it slam in my face. Another time I covered a shift for a coworker who then complained I didn't do her work right. Feels like being nice just makes you the designated doormat sometimes.

Figures you'd get burned either way. Should have told them to keep their nasty coffee maker and sent a bag of actual dirt instead, since they clearly wanted to complain about something. Classic case of no good deed going unpunished. Next time, just stick to the policy and save yourself the headache.
