Vent: A customer threw a fit because their pizza had one less topping than ordered.

I figured out they were stressed from work, so I comped their next order and they cooled right down.

Honestly, the part where you figured out they were just stressed from work really hits me. I used to just see an angry person and get mad back, like they were just trying to get free stuff. But you're right, it's almost never about the pizza. It's about the terrible day they had, or the bad news they got. Seeing it that way turns a fight into a chance to actually help someone.

Nah, that's just letting people get away with bad behavior. Some customers absolutely are just trying to get free stuff, and rewarding them teaches them to throw fits. Remember that lady who faked a peanut allergy for a discount? Or the guy who yelled about a cold burger but was filmed eating it happily in his car? Bending over backwards for every angry person just means you get walked all over. Sometimes a complaint is just a scam, not a cry for help.

patjones said it's almost never about the pizza, it's about the terrible day. But iris175 has a point about people faking it for free stuff. How do you even tell the difference in the moment between someone having a real bad day and someone just running a scam? That line seems really hard to see.
