Had to choose between a knock knock joke and a pun at my nephew's birthday party

I went with the pun about sandwiches because I thought it was safer. The mom got all quiet and said I was making light of her gluten free diet. For real, my sister in law didn't talk to me for like 20 minutes after that. Has anyone else had a simple joke suddenly turn into a family feud?

Oh man, that sandwich pun must have been a real "bread" situation. I once told my aunt her famous potato salad was "a-peeling" and she didn't speak to me for three holidays. Jokes really are a risky business, especially when you're just trying to make the party less awkward and end up being the awkward one yourself.

Potato peels are usually what goes in the peel pile, not the salad though.
