Joke about mother-in-law backfired at the dentist office in Tulsa

Told my dentist a quick one before he put the drill in. Said my mother-in-law's cooking was so bad the dog built a shelter under the porch. Dead silence for a solid 10 seconds. Then his assistant whispered she just moved her mom into assisted living that morning. He didn't even laugh, just handed me the bib and said open wide. Has anyone else had a joke land right on a fresh wound like that?
