My dad joke at a family reunion about my uncle's toupee backfired hard
Honestly, I thought it was harmless. I said, 'Hey Uncle Dave, is that a squirrel on your head or are you just happy to see me?' pointing at his new toupee. The whole table went dead silent for like 10 seconds, and my aunt glared at me like I'd kicked a puppy. I spent the rest of the night apologizing and helping clean up the grill. Has anyone else had a joke about someone's appearance blow up in their face like that?

Good rule of thumb @robertgreen - if you have to ask that question, you probably already knew the answer and just hoped it wouldn't land badly. Most people give off little signals before they get quiet about stuff, you just have to pay attention. Easier to check beforehand than try to fix things after.
