My dad told a knock-knock joke at a funeral in 2018, thought it would lighten the mood

Picked between staying quiet and telling a classic 'banana' joke right after the eulogy, went with the joke and my cousin literally walked out of the room. Has anyone else had a family gathering go south over a bad timing call?

That "lighten the mood" play at a funeral is a classic gamble that usually backfires. Your cousin walking out was probably the nicest reaction, some people would have thrown hands.

Right, that "classic gamble" part hits hard because I once tried to crack a joke at my grandma's wake and my aunt looked at me like I'd personally insulted the entire lineage. I was just trying to lighten the vibe but ended up making everyone uncomfortable including myself. Now I just keep my mouth shut and hope nobody remembers my terrible timing.
