My 'lightbulb joke' at a party got a guy talking about his job at the power company for 20 minutes

I figured telling a simple 'how many electricians does it take to screw in a lightbulb' joke would get a quick laugh at my neighbor's BBQ last Saturday. Instead, this one guy named Dave launched into a whole explanation about voltage loads and why compact fluorescents are a scam. Everyone else just stood there nodding awkwardly while I wished I had kept my mouth shut. Has anyone else had a harmless joke turn into a total conversation killer by accident?
