My uncle's funeral joke made me rethink who gets to tell them

My uncle passed away in January. At the reception, his brother stood up and told this terrible pun about a hearse and a mechanic. Half the room went silent, a couple people looked upset. I used to think timing and delivery were everything with jokes. But his brother said, 'He would have wanted me to butcher this one at his own party.' Something about that hit different. It made me realize the same joke can be a disaster or a tribute depending on who is telling it and why. I used to judge every failed punchline on its own, but now I think context might matter more than the words. Has anyone else had a joke bomb but still felt it was the right call in the moment?
