My uncle's joke about his neighbor's dog ended our barbecue early

Last Saturday at a family cookout in Denver, my uncle told a joke about a poodle that didn't like certain people... turns out his new neighbor across the fence owned that exact breed. The neighbor heard him, walked back inside, and nobody talked to my uncle for the rest of the night. Has anyone else accidentally offended a neighbor with a joke that hit too close to home?

Feel for your uncle, that's a rough spot to be put in. Had a similar thing happen at my buddy's block party last summer when my cousin made a joke about people who don't mow their lawns. Turns out the guy two doors down was in a huge fight with the HOA about his overgrown yard and it got super awkward for the rest of the day. Sometimes jokes land so hard they just crater the whole vibe, you know? Hope your uncle gets a chance to smooth things over with the neighbor soon.
