PSA: tested my dad jokes on 4 coworkers at lunch in Denver, got 3 groans and a complaint to HR
Last Tuesday I tried a new joke at lunch with four guys from my crew at a sandwich spot near Federal Blvd in Denver. I said, if a cow doesn't produce milk, is it a milk dud or a disgruntled cow? Two guys just stared at their food. One gave me the slow head shake. The fourth guy, Dave, actually went to HR because he thought I was making fun of his aunt's dairy farm. I had no idea his aunt even had a farm. HR pulled me in Wednesday for a 20 minute chat about workplace comments, and now I have to do a training module. The joke was about a cow. Anyway, does anyone have a filter for which jokes are safe at work, because mine is clearly broken?
Oh man, that HR trip over a cow joke is rough. Here's the thing I keep noticing, we've all gotten so jumpy that a simple pun turns into a whole meeting with a training module attached. I used to work in an office where you couldn't say "guys" anymore, and someone got talked to for bringing in brownies because of a nut allergy nobody had told her about. The jokes aren't the problem so much as nobody knows the rules anymore, so we all just tiptoe and stare at our sandwiches.
