That time I compared my wife's lasagna recipe to my mom's at Thanksgiving

My wife spent three days on her grandmother's lasagna for Thanksgiving dinner. I took one bite and said 'not bad, but my mom's is way better' without thinking. The whole table went quiet and my mother-in-law actually put her fork down. My wife didn't speak to me for the rest of the evening and I slept on the couch. Has anyone else accidentally compared family recipes and gotten burned like that?

Yeah, the "landmine" part really hits home. I mean, I had a friend who basically did that same thing at her aunt's house last Easter. She was just trying to make small talk and asked when her cousin was due with her baby... except the cousin had lost the pregnancy a few weeks before and nobody had told my friend. The whole room just went dead silent. She still gets reminded of it like two years later, so I'd say you're right, that kind of thing doesn't just blow over with a quick sorry. Really gotta give it time and a lot of genuine effort.
