The punchline about my mother-in-law's stew backfired hard at Thanksgiving

Last Thursday at my sister's place in Columbus, I cracked a joke about her stew being 'leftover from last year' right as my mother-in-law walked in with the exact same dish. She heard me, went silent, and then spent the next 20 minutes talking about her recipe's history in a super cold tone. Has anyone else had a joke land so wrong that you couldn't even explain it was just a bit, or am I the only one who should've read the room better?
