Thought bad puns were always a hit until I told one at a funeral reception

I cracked a joke about the deceased being a 'light eater' because they were on a diet before they passed, thinking it would break the tension. The room went dead silent and my aunt gave me this look like I had insulted the whole family. So tell me, is there a line with dad jokes or should we just avoid heavy topics altogether?

Totally disagree here, I think there's actually a time and a place for dark humor at funerals. Your aunt probably just wasn't ready for it yet, but some families would have appreciated the attempt to lighten the mood. You read the room wrong, not the joke itself.

At my brother-in-law's funeral, his hunting buddies told stories that had us crying one minute and laughing the next, but they kept it respectful and didn't push it too far.
