Told a "your mom" joke at a kid's birthday party and the mom was right there

Last weekend my sister had a party for her 8 year old at a park in Arlington. I was making small talk with some folks and dropped a "your mom" joke without thinking. Turns out the kid's mom was standing two feet behind me and she did not think it was funny at all. Has anyone else accidentally offended a parent with a joke that was meant for a totally different crowd?

Exactly, the whole point of a "your mom" joke is that it's supposed to be about someone who's not there. You basically just walked up and insulted the kid's mom to her face, which is a whole different vibe. I bet the awkward silence after that was pretty brutal.
