I swore those magnetic oil drain plugs were a total gimmick until my buddy's Duramax

He put one in his 2011 LML about 18 months ago and kept telling me to check it. I finally pulled it for him last week during a service. The amount of fine metal fuzz stuck to that plug was honestly shocking, way more than I ever see on a normal plug. It wasn't just a few specks, it was a solid coating. Changed my mind completely about catching wear particles before they cycle through the whole system. Has anyone else run one long term and seen a real difference in filter life or oil analysis?

That "solid coating" of fuzz you saw is exactly why I'm not sold. All that stuff was already in the oil, being caught by the filter. The magnet just gathered it in one spot to look scary. I've cut open plenty of filters and the media is full of the same fine metal. It doesn't actually add any protection, it just moves the wear particles from the filter to the plug. I've never seen proof it makes the filter last longer.

It's like those "detox" foot pads that just pull out water to look effective.

The magnet on my last plug caught a quarter inch of sludge after 5,000 miles, stuff the filter clearly missed. I get what you and charles_green95 are saying about it just moving particles, but keeping that abrasive junk from circulating has to help. My old engine with a magnetic drain plug always had cleaner oil on the dipstick between changes.
