Old timer swore by ATF in the fuel tank, actually worked?

I mean, a guy I used to work with in Lubbock, Texas told me to dump a quart of ATF in a stuck injector pump and let it soak overnight. I thought he was messing with me, but I did it on a 1998 7.3 and the thing freed right up. Has anyone else done this or am I just lucky it didn't wreck the seals? Curious if there's a better trick for dried out pumps.
