Old timer told me to run my DT466 on rotella 15w40 year round even in winter. Called him crazy. Truck wouldn't start at 8 degrees last january in nebraska.

He might be right about the oil weight but cold starts in single digits are a whole different problem. Glow plugs, battery condition, block heater - any of those could be the real issue. Thin oil helps but it won't fix a bad battery or dead glow plugs.
Sounds like the old timer just assumed his setup worked for everyone. Nebraska winters hit different too, not just the temp but the windchill. Block heater is probably your real friend there.
I'd check the glow plug relay first, those things fail all the time. Rotella 15w40 is fine down to about 10 degrees but below that you might want a lighter oil or just plug the truck in.

That "rotella 15w40 is fine down to about 10 degrees" part hits hard. Used to think I knew better but Nebraska cold changed my mind real quick.
