Read an article once about head gaskets on older engines. They said the sequence is less about even pressure and more about controlling how the metal warms up. You tighten it in stages following a specific pattern to let everything settle.

Honestly that's spot on, it's all about the heat cycling. Seen it myself when a buddy rushed the steps on a small block and it wept coolant forever after. Tbh following the pattern slow is the only way it seals right.
