Showerthought: Realized I'd been torquing head bolts wrong for 10 years

Was helping a buddy with a 6.0 Powerstroke at his shop in Tulsa last month. He watched me do my usual 3-step pattern and just shook his head. Turns out I was skipping the final 90-degree turn on the last step this whole time. No wonder I had a couple gaskets fail early on me. Anyone else find out they'd been doing some basic step wrong for years without knowing?

That "90-degree final turn" is the difference between a 100k mile gasket and a 10k mile one.

Dang, that 90-degree final turn gets overlooked all the time for sure.

And you just put your finger on the exact problem I had with my old F-150. I was doing the same thing for years, thinking I was being thorough, and then a shop foreman friend of mine finally set me straight. He showed me how that last little bit of torque actually seats the gasket properly under the clamping load. After that I never had another leaky head gasket on that truck. Its one of those little steps that seems like it shouldnt matter but it really does.
