Stopped at a little repair shop in west Texas and saw something I hadn't thought about in years.
I was driving through Sweetwater last Tuesday and pulled over at this old diesel shop near the highway to grab a filter. The guy there had a whole wall of rebuilt injector pumps from the 90s just sitting on shelves, labeled by hand with masking tape. It got me thinking about how much less disposable those old engines felt compared to the emissions stuff we deal with now. You ever run across a shop that still works on the mechanical stuff exclusively and wonder how they stay afloat?

Oh man, I feel this so hard. I actually had a similar situation pop up last year when my old Ford's lift pump started acting up and nobody local would touch it. If that shop in Sweetwater has the rebuilds on the shelf, you should ask if they keep a core inventory too. I've found that these mechanical injection shops will often swap you a rebuilt pump for your old one plus cash, and they usually know the exact rotorhead and delivery valve specs that'll match your specific engine model. It's worth asking them about the calibration setup they use too because a lot of those shops still have the old Bosch machines that can dial in the timing way more precisely than what most places do now. Just be prepared for a cash-only situation and maybe a wait if they're backed up, but honestly that kind of expertise is getting harder to find every year.

Man, those old mechanical pumps will probably outlive all of us. Guess that's one way to keep the lights on, just hoarding parts from the 90s until the apocalypse comes.

Gotta disagree a bit though. Those old pumps might be tough, but they're not magic. I've seen more than a few fail because the seals dry out or the governor weights just wear down after a few hundred thousand miles, and then you're stuck trying to find a specialty shop that's not backed up for weeks. They're reliable but they still need regular work, just like anything else with moving parts.
