Talked to an old CAT tech and now I think fleet maintenance is backwards

Had coffee with a retired CAT master tech last week in Odessa and he said swapping parts early is how shops stay busy, not how engines stay alive. He showed me oil samples from 3 trucks that got new injectors at 200k and all 3 lost compression by 350k, while ones he ran to 500k on stock parts never opened up. Anyone else see shops pushing preventive swaps that actually do more harm than good?
