That time an injector stuck open on I-80 in Wyoming changed my mind about cheap fuel filters

Oh man, that's a hell of a story. Wyoming winters are no joke, especially on I-80 with the wind and the cold. So when you say the injector stuck open, was that because the filter let some junk through and it jammed the pintle or did the injector itself just fail from age and the cheap filter was just a coincidence? I've had cheap filters let water through that ruined an injection pump on a 7.3, but never had one cause an injector to stick open like that. Really curious what the actual root cause was for you.

Wait was it actually the filter letting junk through or was it maybe a different problem? I've seen those cheap filters do weird things but usually its water or gelling that kills stuff, not a stuck open injector. Could be the injector itself was just old and the cold weather pushed it over the edge. I had a buddy with a 6.0 that dumped fuel into the cylinder from a bad injector o-ring, not the pintle itself getting jammed. Sometimes the cheap filter gets the blame when it was really just bad luck and age.

Man that's a rough situation, I feel for you dealing with that in a Wyoming winter. Nothing worse than being stuck on the side of the road in freezing temps with a diesel that's acting up. Hope you got it sorted and didn't have to sleep in the truck.
