Choosing a base in Medellin for 3 months was tougher than I thought

I had to pick between a modern high-rise in El Poblado with fast internet or a quieter, local spot in Laureles with way more character. I went with Laureles, got a small apartment for $750 a month, and it's been great for actually feeling like I live here, not just visit. Has anyone else faced a similar choice between convenience and local vibe in a new city?

Is picking an apartment really that big of a deal? You're only there for three months, not buying a house. It sounds like you made a fine choice, so why even worry about the other option now?

Margaret's comment misses the point. Where you live totally changes your daily experience, even for three months. Poblado's convenience can trap you in an expat bubble. You chose right. Laureles forces you to engage with the city, and that's how you actually learn a place. The cheaper rent is just a bonus.

Lol honestly Margaret must be a blast at parties. Picking where you live for three months is like picking a pair of shoes for a long hike. Sure you can wear fancy flip flops in El Poblado and stay comfortable but you're not really experiencing the trail. Laureles is like a solid pair of boots that actually gets you dirty and lets you feel the ground. Ngl I'd rather have a little character in my daily walk to get coffee than a high rise elevator and a view of other expats. Sometimes people don't get that the choice itself kind of matters even for a short stay.
