Coworking pass vs coffee shop hopping - one is a trap

I spent 3 months bouncing between coffee shops in Chiang Mai. $5 lattes, bad wifi, hunting for outlets. Then I dropped $150 on a monthly coworking pass at Punspace. Stable internet, free water, actual desks. My output doubled easy. The coffee shop route seems cheaper but you buy drinks and snacks all day. Anyone else make the switch and notice the same thing?

Tried coworking in a hostel in Thailand for a month. Lost money and focus.

Booked a private room at a place in Chiang Mai. Thought it'd be cheap and social. Reality: WiFi died every day at 3pm. Had to take calls in the lobby with reggae music blasting. Spent $50 on cafe coffees just to get work done. Learned the hard way that cheap rent doesn't mean cheap productivity. Anyone else regret the hostel coworking thing?

Overheard a guy at a coworking space say he works 4 hours a day and makes 6 figures

I was grabbing coffee at this coworking space in Medellin last week and this dude next to me was on a call. He straight up told someone he works 4 hours a day and brings in over $100k a year from his ecommerce store. At first I thought he was full of it. But I started paying attention to how he moved through his day. He did deep work from 8 to 10, took a break, then did another 2 hours of just email and client stuff in the afternoon. No meetings, no scrolling, no multitasking. It hit me that I waste SO MUCH time pretending to work when I could just finish and go enjoy life. Has anyone else tried cutting your work hours but being super strict about focus? I want to try it but worried my clients will think I'm slacking off.

Rant: This whole 'work from a beach' photo trend is misleading new digital nomads

I see these Instagram shots of someone typing on a laptop with turquoise water behind them and it gives people the wrong idea. I've been working from coworking spaces in Medellin for 8 months now and maybe 10% of my day is actually fun exploring. The other 90% is bad wifi, hunting for power outlets, and trying to take a Zoom call without a dog barking or a blender going off in the background. Meanwhile new folks show up expecting paradise and burn out in two weeks because they can't separate the fantasy from the reality. Am I the only one who thinks we should be more honest about the boring grind part of this lifestyle?

The internet was fine, the espresso was good, but I could not get my client's system to load because of some IP block, so I basically paid to sit there and curse at my laptop screen and I'm wondering if anyone else has just completely wasted a day pass on tech issues while traveling.

I was paying $150 a month for a fancy coworking space in Chiang Mai thinking the internet was top tier. Then last week my membership lapsed for a day so I just used my AIS SIM card hotspot from home. Turns out my $20 a month phone plan gives me faster and more stable speeds than that whole building. The coworking space had like 50 people all sharing one connection while my hotspot is just me. My backpack zipper broke in a random bus station in Medellin last week and all my stuff spilled out onto the floor. No big deal right? Compared coworking in Chiang Mai vs Da Nang for 3 months each

Chiang Mai had better wifi and more nomads but the air quality was terrible during burning season. Da Nang had way more reliable power and cheaper rent at $250 a month for a nice studio with a sea view. Anyone else pick location based mostly on internet speeds and electricity stability?

Last Tuesday was the worst digital nomad day I’ve had in months

I was in a co-working space in Medellín and everything went wrong at once. My laptop froze right in the middle of a client call and I couldn’t restart it for like 10 minutes. Then my portable charger died because I forgot to charge it the night before. The WiFi went down for an hour and I had to use my phone hotspot, which ate through my data plan costing me an extra $20. To top it off, my coffee spilled all over my notebook and I had to redo some notes for a project. I ended up just packing up and going back to my Airbnb early. Three months into nomad life before I realized my insurance didn't cover me abroad

I was sitting in a clinic in Chiang Mai with a nasty spider bite on my ankle, waiting to be seen. The nurse asked for my insurance info and I handed over my US health card like usual. She looked at it, handed it back, and said this clinic only accepts Thai or international policies. That's when I found out my Blue Cross plan doesn't cover anything outside the country. Cost me $200 out of pocket for that visit and a bottle of antibiotics. Anyone else find this out the hard way or did you actually read the fine print before you left?
