Just realized my "remote work paradise" in Bali was a wifi nightmare

I landed in Canggu thinking I'd be cranking out code poolside, but my Airbnb had internet that dropped every 10 minutes like clockwork. Turns out the router was in a locked closet downstairs and I was three floors up with concrete walls. After losing 5 hours of progress on a freelance deadline, I moved to a coworking spot near Berawa Beach for $35 a week - steady 50mbps and they even had a backup Starlink connection. Has anyone else had to bail on a "perfect" AirBnb because the wifi was a complete lie?

Wait, $35 a week for a coworking spot near Berawa? That sounds like it might be the Outpost or one of the older places, but most spots there are closer to $50-60 a week now, especially with backup Starlink. I was in Canggu last month and the prices have gone up since everyone flooded back after COVID. Concrete walls are the real killer though, even a good router can't punch through that. I learned the hard way to always ask hosts for a speed test screenshot from the actual bedroom.

That part about concrete walls got me thinking. It's like how everything these days is built for how things look in a photo, not for how they actually work. I see it all the time in the new apartments going up around here - big glass windows for the view but no thought to the heat or the noise from the street. Seems like we've all gotten so used to seeing something online first that the reality of it just doesn't matter anymore.

Wonder how many of those places are just using one of those cheap range extenders and calling it good.
