I always thought travel insurance was a scam until I got dengue fever in Chiang Mai

I was in Thailand for three months and skipped it to save $200. Then I got sick, and the hospital bill was over $1,500. A friend I met at a co-working space told me to check my credit card benefits, and it turns out my card had some basic coverage that ended up covering about half of it. Still had to pay a lot out of pocket, but it made me realize even basic coverage is worth checking. What's the best travel insurance you've actually had to use?

My buddy's claim with World Nomads was smooth.

What a nightmare, but smart move checking your card! I had a great experience with SafetyWing when I got food poisoning in Mexico. They covered the clinic visit and meds without any hassle, just had to send them the receipt. Their process was all online which made it way easier.

Glad SafetyWing worked for you, but their coverage for US trips is actually pretty limited, which a lot of people miss. The_ray's friend got lucky with World Nomads, but I've heard more stories about them denying claims for not having the right paperwork upfront. Always read the full policy doc, not just the marketing page.
