I thought a local SIM was always cheaper until I got a $5 eSIM in Bangkok
My usual airport kiosk was charging $30, but an app called Airalo had a 7-day plan for a quarter of that. Anyone know a good eSIM for Mexico City next month?

That Airalo app was a lifesaver in Tokyo too.

Thirty dollars at an airport kiosk is just robbery with a smile. The price difference is honestly wild. I've had good luck with Nomad in Mexico City, it was cheap and actually worked.

Airport kiosks are such a trap, it's crazy. I got burned like that once and never again. What @brookeross said about Airalo is spot on, those apps are a total game changer. It just makes you wonder who actually pays the thirty bucks. Maybe it's just people in a total panic. Setting up an eSIM before you land is the only way to go now.
