Lost my entire client project when my laptop died in a Bali coworking space

I was sitting at Hubud in Ubud finishing a big design deadline when my laptop just shut off and wouldn't turn back on, and I had no backup because I thought I'd be fine for just one afternoon - has anyone else had a hard drive crash at the worst possible moment and how did you recover your work?

Had to pay some random guy to try and pull the data out of mine once.

I always just yank the drives out myself before I toss a dead laptop. @gibson.elizabeth, I've got a old USB to SATA adapter that cost me like 15 bucks on Amazon, and it's pulled data off three dead machines now. Just gotta know if that laptop uses a 2.5 inch or a m.2 drive first, or you'll be stuck ordering the wrong cable.
