My whole remote work setup crashed during a client call in Bali last week

I was on a Zoom call with a big client from my co-working space in Ubud when my laptop just shut down out of nowhere. The battery was at 40% so I thought it was fine, but the power outlet in this place is super unstable. I lost the connection for like 10 minutes while I scrambled to find a backup charger. Turns out the voltage spiked and fried my adapter completely. Now I always carry a surge protector AND a portable battery pack with me. Has anyone else had power issues mess up their work days in Southeast Asia?

Honestly that sounds like a nightmare, I feel your pain. I had something similar happen in Chiang Mai last year - I was typing up a big report and the power flickered so bad my laptop just hard shut down and I lost two hours of work. Now I'm paranoid about plugging into any random outlet over here, I basically travel with a whole power toolkit.

Damn, I feel that. My buddy had the exact same thing happen in a co-working spot in Canggu, his laptop bricked from a power surge during a deadline. He now travels with a whole power toolkit too, it's wild out there.

Man, that's rough. What worked for me was just getting one of those cheapo plug-in voltage testers from a hardware store before I left. It's tiny, just a little thing you stick in the outlet and it gives you a readout or lights up green for safe. Also, I started keeping all my big stuff on a good surge protector power strip, not just the little cube adapters. Sounds obvious but it saved my butt in a homestay in Vietnam when the AC unit kicked on and the lights dimmed real bad.
