Found a rotting deck board under my grill last week
I was cooking burgers and the whole corner gave way under the weight, nearly sent my Weber tumbling into the flower bed. Has anyone else had hidden rot problems with older composite decking?

Totally feel you, that's a scary moment when the grill almost goes over.

Yeah that thing about the corner giving way under the grill is a real pain. Its like how everything eventually gets worn out from the inside before you notice it on the surface. I had a plastic storage bin in my garage that looked fine until I grabbed the handle and the whole side cracked open. That hidden rot in your deck board is the same type of sneaky failure. Its stuff we trust to hold up everyday weight, but the damage builds up slow and quiet until a burger flips everything.

Is it really that sneaky though? I mean, @zarab24, a deck board rotting from the inside sounds like something you would notice if you ever walked on it barefoot or looked underneath every few years. Plastic bins crack because the plastic gets brittle, but wood usually gives you a warning with some soft spots or weird smells before it just gives out completely. I feel like most of the time people just ignore the obvious signs until something fails, then act surprised.
