Everyone said I was wrong" but a gravel base drains way better than concrete ever could.

Wait who on earth was telling you concrete drains better than gravel? That's wild. Gravel is literally made to let water through, concrete just pools it. I'm honestly shocked anyone would argue the other way lol.
